Basic concepts related to the perception of separability in a two dimensional acoustic field are discussed, leading to an elegant mathematical measure of separability. The technique presented provides a new and powerful tool for defining directional fidelity in four channel systems. A few typical matrix systems are analyzed revealing interesting insights.
