An improved Real Ear test method has been developed using an I.C. Microphone and is suited to measurements on high fidelity headphones. The microphone utilizes an integrated strain gage bridge pressure transducer and has a frequency response uniform +/- 1dB from 20 to 20,000 Hertz. Tests of five high quality stereophones were made using three Artificial Ears and results compared to Real Ear measurements. Measurements of concha sound pressure response versus frequency were made in a listening room using human subjects. Frequency response requirements for headphones are established as the Headphone Electroacoustical Transfer (HEAT) curve. A Personal Equalization Procedure (PEP) for high fidelity headphones is discussed, plus requirements for equalizers.
