WEAR-RESISTANT HY MU 800/1, presently in pilot production by Carpenter Technology, contains small wear-resistant particles dispersed throughout. Saturation induction for this new material is only slightly diluted by the nonmagnetic particles. Although the low-frequency permeability of annealed ring samples of the wear-resistant material is much lower than for HY MU 80/1, when the materials are encapsulated, as in a magnetic head, the initial dc permeabilities are nearly the same: 4400 for the standard and 3900 for the wear-resistant material. Wear tests using magnetic tape are described: the new material wears away at about 10% of the rate of Carpenter HY MU 80. The new material has mechanical working properties essentially identical to the standard material. Head performance studies show that WEAR-RESISTANCE HA MU 800 can be used successfully in magnetic recording heads, particularly if the gap length is not extremely small.
