This paper describes the development of horn theory from Rayleigh through Webster, Hanna and Slepian, Percy Wilson, P.B. Flanders, and Paul Voigt up to the comprehensive analyses by Harry Olson and Leo Beranek. It includes an account of some early experiments by the senior author on methods of folding horns. A description is also given of a recent acoustic phonograph with a fabulous response down to 30 Hz thanks to loading by an external exponential horn that is curved rather than folded.
