Compared with transmission on one channel (mono) more information and pleasure is derived from two or more channels. The resulting gain improves more and more slowly as the number of channels keeps getting increased and is mainly governed by, among other parameters, the geometric distribution of the microphones or loudspeakers in the room. The efficiency of such a system (defined as the proportion of a room in which spatial hearing and localization are satisfactory) and the spatial average of the localization quality characterize the performance of multiphonic systems, which are becoming increasingly important in studio acoustics and in cases where two halls have to be electroacoustically hooked up with one another.
