Simultaneous Multichannel Impulse Response Measurement Using Zadoff–Chu Sequences
Journal of the Audio Engineering Society · Volume 74 · Issue 9 · pp. 688–695 · September 2026
Abstract
Based on the orthogonality of cyclically shifted Zadoff–Chu sequences, a method for the simultaneous estimation of multiple impulse responses is presented. When multiple sources excite a shared transmission medium simultaneously, the receiver captures a composite signal comprising the superimposed contributions of all active sources. By assigning cyclically shifted versions of a base sequence to each source, the individual impulse responses can be recovered from this superposition via circular deconvolution. The approach is applicable to any linear time-invariant transmission medium and supports multiple-input single-output and multireceiver measurement configurations, enabling the simultaneous estimation of a complete set of source–receiver impulse responses within a single synchronized acquisition. Experimental validation in an acoustic propagation scenario demonstrates accurate recovery of individual impulse responses under simultaneous multisource excitation.
