Immersive Network Music Performance: Evaluation of the Effect of Auralized Reverberation Time

Immersive Network Music Performance (INMP) systems extend low-latency remote performance technology with immersive audio systems. Here, remote musicians are provided auralization of collocated performance in a simulated acoustic space. Prior work has suggested that simulated acoustics may influence the INMP experience but reported ambiguous expectations. This paper contributes evaluation of the effect of auralized reverberation time (RT) in INMP. Sixteen singers participate in a study where an Ambisonics-based INMP system is used to perform under different latency and RT conditions. Evaluation was conducted through synchrony analysis and quality of experience rating. Results demonstrate that experience deterioration is associated with comparatively short and long RT and suggest that long RT may be associated with impaired synchrony. These findings indicate that experience optimization is possible through acoustic control.
