MPAI-CAE: Towards a New Standard for Navigable Immersive Audio

The advent of immersive systems that enable positional navigation made it necessary to develop audio technologies that can support not only the usual three degrees of freedom associated with head orientation, but also the three degrees of freedom associated with positional translations. Two navigable immersive audio paradigms that can be provided to users are the scene-based and object-based paradigms. In 2024, MPAI has started standardisation activities on these two different approaches in the context of the MPAI-CAE standard. This paper presents the fundamental concepts, use cases and technological solutions being considered as well as a progress report.
