The newly established undergraduate degree in Music Technology at North Carolina State University is an interdisciplinary program situated between Music and Electrical and Computer Engineering. In addition to the musical and technical education, the degree curriculum includes practical instruction with comprehensive training in the design, construction, and utilization of recording and mixing environments. To facilitate this pedagogical objective, a versatile audio system was implemented within a designated space in the Price Music Center. Prices is a facility originally constructed in 1971 to accommodate diverse instructional use cases. This case study provides a detailed account of the transformation of this space, encompassing the initial design conceptualization, sound isolation measures, audio system installation, and subsequent acoustic treatments. The designated area is situated on the ground floor, in proximity to ensemble rehearsal halls and individual practice rooms. The existing construction features painted concrete cinder block walls, low-pile carpet tile flooring, drop-down ceiling tiles, and doors fitted with single-pane glass. The initial design phase delineated requirements for a sound-isolated recording room, an instructional mixing space, and dedicated storage. The instructional mixing space was designed to incorporate a frame structure for speaker mounting and a flexible audio system, enabling various playback formats and future expansion. This case study provides results of measurements and outlines prospective developments, specifically the expansion of the audio system`s input capabilities to integrate audio over IP (AoIP) connectivity with the adjacent rehearsal halls.
