Visualization of the spatial behavior between channels in surround program

Authors: Smokotnin, Pavel

Express Paper · Paper 355 · May 2025

Abstract

Nowadays more and more audio programs in movies, broadcasting, and music recording are using surround formats. Tools that were used to analyze the stereo recording are not always able to work with modern formats, for example, a vectorscope. Thus it's creating a requirement for a new tool able to visualize interchannel correlations in complex layouts. The goal of this project is to develop this type of tool. This instrument uses an original approach of the vectorscope but utilizes additional information about the speakers' positions in space. Possible shapes for the different channel correlations that could be drawn on a scope's screen are shown and analyzed for the 5.0 surround program. Such instruments can be used for any potential layout, including immersive systems. The invention is useful for audio mixing engineers and quality control services in different specializations.
