Abstract

Orchestral music is a complex amalgamation of sounds: an intricate blend a variety of starkly different instruments coming together in a juxtaposition of performer and space. The relationship between the two is idiosyncratic to the experience of classical music. Channel-based and Ambisonics capture techniques have different advantages and disadvantages in the representation of these two elements for immersive reproduction. This paper evaluates the perceptual differences between these systems individually, as well as in hybrid configurations. These hybrids were created by separating the recording into performer (source) capture and room (ambient) capture, then mixing them in two ways: one with performer capture being primarily channel-based and room capture primarily Ambisonics, and another with the roles reversed. The results, gathered via survey during blind listening sessions, provide insights into the potential benefits and drawbacks of hybrid mixing in orchestral recording
