Application of spatial audio for the human perception of radio frequency fields

Authors: Todd, Steven; Lenzing, Erik; Roan, Michael

AES 2024 International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality · Paper 5 · August 2024

Abstract

This paper introduces a new method for spatial radio frequency (RF) recording and sonification which enables human detection, classification, and localization of RF signal sources. A modified version of the orthogonal matching pursuits algorithm is used to create an RF array that produces signals compatible with spatial audio processing methods. Further, a sonification algorithm using principal component analysis was developed. This algorithm extracts the most common information from the RF data and shifts it into an audible range of frequencies. These two components are combined to produce an audible soundfield representative of the RF data.
