Abstract

A head-related-transfer-function (HRTF) model is presented, using delays, shelving filters for interaural-level-difference (ILD), and biquad equalizers for front-rear and elevation monaural cues. Based on averaged data from a few dozen measured HRTF sets, mappings are defined from azimuth and elevation to delays, ILD filters, and the monaural cues equalizers. The HRTF data implies that separate equalizers for front-rear and elevation cues, respectively, can approximate these. In addition to using the model directly to render binaural sound, the model can be used to convert omnidirectional-microphone array impulse responses or binaural-room-impulse-responses (BRIRs) to HRTFs, and to enable head-tracking for static HRTFs or BRIRs.
