Convention Paper

A New Digital Time-Delay and Reverberation System, Part II: Psychoacoustics vs. Practical Electronics

Authors: Mitchell, Peter W.; DeFreitas, Richard E.

AES Convention 55 · Paper 1191 · October 1976

Abstract

By repetitively recycling an audio signal through a digital time-delay module, one can produce reverberation which usually sounds decidedly unlike natural reverberation. This paper discusses the electronic and psychoacoustic considerations involved in the development of a time-delay/reverberation system whose goal is the convincing synthesis of a quadraphonic ambient sound field from monophonic or stereophonic program material.
