Sound systems that place loudspeakers all around the audience have long since been adopted by the film industry, however, the influence these technologies can have on film viewing experiences has seen limited experimental validation. The study presented in this paper investigates the influence of three different multichannel soundtracks on the subjective assessment of a short film. To make this assessment, a short questionnaire was developed from concepts related to immersion described in previous publications. The results of the study suggest that the different soundtracks have no significant impact on the viewer’s feeling of immersion. However, further analysis suggests that for some participants, having sounds emanating from behind them was considered distracting.
