A New Method for HRTFs Interpolation based on Inverse Distance Weighting

Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) are widely used in immersive audio rendering since they contain the localization cues and spectral features essential for the synthesis of moving sound sources. In this context, HRTF interpolation is an important technique that may be used with the purpose of reducing the HRTF measurement points without affecting the spatialization effect. In this paper, inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolation is exploited to improve a previous interpolation algorithm based on linear interpolation. The IDW interpolation introduces an extra tunable parameter that allows obtaining interpolated HRTFs more similar to the measured ones. Several experiments have been carried out to prove the effectiveness of the IDW method, in comparison with the linear interpolation applied to HRTFs.
