AES Convention 153 · Paper 30 · October 2022

Abstract

There are a great many hurdles to developing the skillset required to succeed in the sound reinforcement industry. Traditionally, these skills are acquired over years of work in the industry, by refining skills on the job, and through observing more skilled practitioners at work. This can make the learning experience intimidating and costly, which dissuades many students from even attempting certain of these tasks. The system detailed herein provides an opportunity for the user to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce in a time- and cost-conscious manner. The system combines multitrack audio, video, binaural rendering, and a user feedback system in a high-level programming environment to form a prototype system which allows students to practice the requisite skills in a realistic manner. The system can also be used to collect objective and subjective data on performance of standard live sound reinforcement tasks including system, sound checks, and live concert mixing, all while building skills, providing benchmarks to users, and allowing for some varying taste and artistic interpretation of the user.
