The sound system located in Ellis Hall at the Marine Corps Education Center at Quantico, Va., is employed in teaching amphibious assault tactics to Marine Corps officers. To provide adequate amplification of instructor`s voices from anywhere on the 50- by 70-ft terrain model, a system of eight shot-gun microphones is mounted 12 ft above the model. Peak limiter amplifiers control overloading from miniature explosions triggered in the terrain model. Close talking microphones pick up audience questions. A 24-input 4-output audio control console is used to control the voice sound reinforcement system with a dual-channel high-intensity combat-sound reproduction system. Dual three-speed tape recorders provide recording of speech, sound-effect reproduction, and tape duplication. A back-up system of electronics provides for increased reliability with a rapid changeover control system.
