Aircraft Infrasonic Noise Evaluation Problems

A literature survey has been conducted on audio noise measurement and evaluation problems associated with aircraft operations. The results suggest that low-frequency or infrasonic noise has been largely neglected in most noise abatement studies, but that this may contribute to human discomfort in many situations well below the threshold of ear pain. Of particular interest is a possible connection between the alpha rhythm of the brain in the 5-10 Hz region and corresponding high-level noise variations. Audio engineers might contribute to more quantitative measurements in this region by devising low-cost signature identification analyzers and level sensors for widespread use in evaluating human annoyance factors.
