AB - Millions of people are estimated to be at the risk of developing early hearing loss (HL) as a result of listening to personal media players (PMPs). Legislation now mandated by the European Commission has successfully brought down the SPL from PMPs sold in Europe, but with the adverse effect that music and other content not produced like modern pop no longer can be played loudly enough to be heard under typical listening conditions. The current status is summarized, and methods to reduce false negative and false positive user-warnings are proposed. Improved sound dose estimation in PMPs may furthermore help stem the "Loudness Wars" in music, thereby also protecting music heritage.
