The audiometer earphone is a test instrument in the measurement of hearing, but real-ear response of the standard American earphone is subject to a range of intersubject and cushion-fit variation of the order of 25 dB at 100 Hz, 6 dB at 1 kHz, and 15 dB at 5 kHz. An earphone mounting that reduces this variation significantly, and a method of making valid measurements of earphone real-ear response, are described.
