Validation of the Binaural Room Scanning Method Using Subjective Ratings of Spatial Attributes

Binaural Room Scanning is a method of capturing and reproducing a binaural representation of a room or car audio system, using a dummy head incorporating binaural microphones. Individual measurements or recordings are made with the dummy head positioned at a number of different head angles, and playback is provided using a headtracker to make a full spatial reproduction of a room or car. Previous investigations show that this method can reproduce an acoustical environment with sufficient accuracy that overall preference judgments made using the virtual playback system match those made in-situ. This study extends that work, looking at spatial qualities separately. A number of modifications were made to the spatial character of stereo audio playback of music signals. Subjects were asked to give comparative preference ratings for each stimulus, focusing on spatial attributes. These spatial preference ratings were made using BRS playback, and also in-situ in the vehicle, and results compared.
