Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) and HRTF filters have shown to introduce coloration in perceptual evaluations. Methods to reduce the coloration by modifying the HRTF filters have been proposed, but the effect of the HRTF measurement method on the coloration has not been addressed. A listening test was conducted to study the audibility of coloration caused by different HRTF filter design methods. HRTF filters were designed using pressure measurements at the eardrum and the blocked ear canal entrance as well as pressure-velocity measurements at the open ear canal entrance. Significant variation in perceived coloration was found. The most coloration was caused by the methods using non-individual blocked ear canal measurements while the method using pressure-velocity measurements at the open ear canal entrance caused least coloration.
