Talking and Listening Levels in Verbal Communication -- Importance of Specifying Parametric Values

The specification of talking and listening levels for face-to-face as well as for system communication is meaningful only to the extent that the conditions involved are also specified. The influence of such factors as ambient noise, system gain, assigned task, etc., in establishing meaningful levels is outlined. It is shown that the acceptability of the communication achieved depends upon the acceptability of the received signal itself and upon the acceptability of the vocal effort involved.
