VoIP provides new possibilities for communication between people. It makes calling more flexible and cheaper, allowing people to keep in touch globally as they do now locally. VoIP allows easy combination of new services on top of the traditional voice call, like video call, chatting, file sharing, and presence information. In terms of audio, VoIP can be seen as an extension to telecommunication solutions that started from a landline telephone more than 100 years ago and expanded to mobile communication in late 1980s. VoIP provides benefits to speech quality; with wideband coding, higher bitrates and new coder types, but it also contains new technical challenges. The challenges are related to properties of IP packet network, home computers and wireless links, effects being variable and long delay in the speech signal, more pronounced acoustic echo, packet loss and unknown acoustic interface of user. Typical VoIP specific bene-fits, challenges, and solutions are described in the paper.
