A new approach for matrix surround decoding is presented. The matrix encoded stereo input signal is decomposed into direct sound and ambience. In addition to the direct sound, a gain factor (left/right amplitude ratio) is computed as a function of time and frequency, which indicates how the direct sound is contained in the matrix encoded stereo signal. It is shown that this gain factor uniquely determines the 360 degree positioning of the direct sound, if an appropriate matrix encoder is used. Given this information, the direct sound is mixed to the loudspeaker signals. The two ambience channels, obtained from the matrix encoded stereo signal, are further processed to obtain front and rear ambience channels, which are also mixed to the loudspeaker signals. The proposed algorithm has low computational complexity due to the fact that no reverberators need to be used.
