Multichannel Surround Format Conversion and Generalized Upmix

Recent research in the fields of spatial audio coding, multichannel upmix and source separation has demonstrated that frequency-domain analysis-synthesis techniques enable effective spatial manipulation or coding of two-channel or multichannel audio recordings. In this paper, we extend the application of these techniques to the problem of playing back a multichannel recording, intended for playback over a pre-defined loudspeaker layout, over a different layout potentially comprising a different number of channels. After reviewing some possible time-domain solutions, we describe a frequency-domain method based on spatial audio coding using an intermediate mono downmix, and introduce an improved method which does not involve an intermediate reduction to mono.
