Abstract

In this paper we present an application of stack-run entropy coding to audio compression. Stack-run coding represents signed integers and zero run length by adaptive arithmetic coding using a quaternary alphabet (0, 1, +, -). We use this method to encode the scalar quantization indices representing the MDCT spectrum of perceptually weighted wideband audio signals (sampled at 16000 Hz). Noise injection and pre-echo reduction
are also used to improve quality. The average quality of the proposed technique is similar to ITU-T G722.1. In addition, we compare the performance of scalar quantization with stack-run coding to the multirate lattice vector quantization of 3GPP AMR-WB+.
