AB - We present a novel microphone array that consists of an open spherical array with a smaller rigid spherical array at its centre. The distribution of microphones, which results in the array having the largest frequency range, for a given beamforming order, was obtained by analysing microphone errors. For a fixed number of microphones, the results for several examples indicate that the maximum frequency range is obtained when the microphones are relatively evenly distributed between the open and rigid spheres.
