Most air travelers will probably agree that there is still considerable room for improvement in the performance of aircraft public address systems. In connection with the new Lockheed L-1011 Tristar, we had an opportunity to take a fresh look at their design. The L-1011 is one of a new generation of wide-body passenger jets that will se use in this decade. The cabin interior features a ceiling height of nearly eight feet and a width of about twenty feet. Various seating arrangments accommodate from 250 to 345 passengers; the seats are larger than in current airplanes and broad double aisles and cross aisles facilitate passenger movement. The overall emphasis in executing the interior design has been toward passenger appeal through comfort and attractive decor. Early in 1968, Lockheed was formally requested by some of its airline customers to study the development of a stereophonic high fidelity boarding music and passenger address system for the L-1011. This system, would replace the voice-quality passenger address system and would be a logical step in pursuing the overall design philosophy of the L-1011 as a jetliner with outstanding passenger appeal.
