Sound amplification systems in reverberant spaces must increase speech clarity as well as loudness. Directional realism should be maintained if possible. The paper discusses six different approaches to the design of sound systems, categorized according to the disposition of loudspeakers in the room: (1) central array, (2) two central arrays, (3) conventional distributed cone loudspeakers, (4) pew-back distributed cone loudspeakers, (5) distributed directional horns, and (6) distributed column loudspeakers. Reasons for choosing one type of system over another and the important design considerations for each type are discussed, with specific examples.
