At the Marine Corps Education Center, Quantico, Virginia, a complex audiovisual system is utilized to support classroom instruction in the teaching of amphibious assault techniques. This paper will describe the unique -classroom- sound system. The -classroom- in this instance is a large theater-type building called Ellis Hall: it consists of a simulated operations area fifty by seventy feet-its permanent seating capacity holds 376 participating student/observer trainees. In the front of this sprawling rectangular hall is an elevated stage equipped with a large projection screen and two speaker podiums. Along the 27-foot high acoustical tiled side-walls are the stadium-type seating galleries for the students. In the rear of the hall is an office, a planning room, and an audio-visual control room. Above these rooms is a projection booth flanked bya balcony for additional seating. Various types of lighting fixtures and projection systems used for visual effects are suspended from the 27 foot high, acoustically tiled ceiling.
