AB - The study identifies how wind noise is generated in microphones and how important different mechanisms are at different frequencies. Studies in a quiet wind tunnel have been performed on the noise spectrum from microphones embedded in a turbulent air stream of known characteristics. The effect of the microphone's housing in creating a turbulent boundary layer is included. Scaling relationships are found which give insight into noise generating mechanisms and the effects of microphone geometry and placement. The noise spectrum consists of three regimes: a constant noise level band at low frequencies; and 1/f behaviour but with different generating mechanisms and scaling dependence on wind speed and other variables in two distinct higher frequency bands. Appropriate noise reduction schemes are explored.
