It has long been a dream of the music lover to enjoy recorded music in his home with the same feeling of presence that he gets attending a live concert. With the development of stereophonic reproducing equipment since 1958, it seemed that part of this dream has been fulfilled. To bring this dream closer to perfection a multi-channel reproducing system was developed. This system, using 4-channel tapes as its media, is now in the initial stage of being commercialized. This multi-channel system is based on the so-called 2-2 method, in which two speakers are placed in front of the audience and two in the back. Since this is an economical way of giving an on the spot feeling to the consumer in his home environment, it seems natural that this 4-channel system is about to take root. Consequently, we are rapidly coming to a time where demand will spread, if economical equipment and enjoyable music sources are made available to the public.
