Static, dynamic and playback techniques for measuring the vertical tracking angle of stereophonic phonograph pickups are discussed. Static measurements are not always reliable indications of the angle of the pickup under playback conditions. The most accurate and sensitive angle measurement is based on the frequency modulation of a 4000 cps tone by a 400 cps tone when the tones are recorded together on a stereodisk. Instrumentation for this measurement technique is described. By means of an Electronic Delay Modulator a new 400 + 4000 cps test record has been made. Pickup-angle measurement can be accomplished quickly and simply through playback of this record. The record contains bands having vertical recorded angles between -12° and +44° in 4° increments. A second group of bands contains angles between 7.5° and 25° in 2.5° increments to permit more careful measurements in the vicinity of the standard 15° angle.
