A Digital Hardware for Filtering and Mixing of Audio Signals

The continual aspiration towards improvements in professional broadcast and studio equipment has called for a conversion fom traditional analog systems to digital processing of high quality audio signals. This paper describes a special purpose digital hardware processor dedicated to the processing usually found in conventional analog mixing desks. Equalization and mix-down from six to two channels are done with a sample rate of 50 kHz and the audio signals coded to 16 bits. The same hardware unit performs the filtering, the mix-down and a final fading in real time. Special attention has been paid to the noise introduced due to the finite-precision arithetic in the implementation of digital systems. The processor therefore uses two LSI multiplier-accumulator units in parallel to perform the high speed arithmetic with 23-bit resolution.
