Abstract

Little work has been done in the study of loudspeaker dispersion dynamics, particularly with arrays of drivers suitable for sound reinforcement applications. We have developed a mathematical model which allows the three-dimensional dispersion characteristics of an arbitrarily configured arrangement of real drivers (i.e. loudspeakers with defined amplitude, phase delay, and horizontal/vertical polar dispersion characteristics as a function of frequency) to be simulated using a set of interactive computer programs. In this paper we will derive the mathematical basis of our model, describe the set of computer programs in the simulation package, and present the results of several case studies illustrating its utility.
