The usual procedure for selection of loudspeaker systems in low frequency commercial applications is to consult a manufacturer`s catalog sheets and select a device, or a group of devices, that appear to satisfy the criteria for desired sound pressure levels in the installation environment. The criteria normally used by sound consultants and contractors are pressure sensitivity, frequency response, power capacity and attenuation-with-distance formulas. As a consequence, the design of low frequency loudspeaker systems is largely a trial and error process based upon limited available data, and the results are often disappointing. Recently, however, cognizant manufacturers have made Thiele-Small parameters available for commercial drivers, greatly simplifying the sytem design process, and enabling predictable results to be obtained.
