New approaches in digital audio tape recorder design and control, together with the concept of a labels track, make it possible to restate the problem of digital audio editing, and to find new solutions to it. A unified approach to fast recorder synchronization, different types of electronic editing (with or without external mass storage) and different types of tape-cut editing is presented. In particular, a technique for combining the speed and economy of tape-cut editing with the flexibility and freedom from degradation of electronic editing is proposed.
