For live broadcasting of sporting events and stage performances, there is not normally a vertical distribution of sound so that a microphone array with sharp horizontal directivity is desirable. We have arrayed 40 microphone elements with cardoid directivity on an arc of a circle with the signals from the 40 elements added using a Hamming window by support of computer simulation. This microphone array has extremely sharp horizontal directivity when compared with conventional shotgun microphones (line microphones), with a good frequency response and signal to noise ratio. Taking in advantage of the microphone array, we also have designed so that the beam direction can be controlled instantly and remotely by adding the outputs of the microphone elements through digitally-controlled delay circuits. Furthermore, a video camera was placed at the center of the microphone array and a cursor was superimposed on the screen of the TV monitor. This cursor indicated the position towards which beam was pointing. It was confirmed that sound can be picked up easily to follow moving players at sporting events such as soccer game.
