Digital audio recording provides new areas for improvement in data recording. The paper begins with a new approach to identifying the recording channel for run-length limited data. New techniques are derived for digital equalization, including the possibility of simple adaptive equalization, drop-out detection, synchronization, data detection and decoding. They compare favourably with analog or digital equalizing filters in the case of multitrack recording. Related techniques can be used for efficiently recording low-rate data on bandpass recording channels, including digital cue signals. Finally, a new technique is presented for improving track-selective overwrite attenuation without erasing heads.
