A measurement technique is discussed that indicates subjective sound quality for digital-audio systems while allowing a significant simplification in the analysis due to the reduction of the auditory masking effect. This technique applies sinewave signals and divides up the resultant output spectrum using the critical band concept to determine the audibility of the noise and distortion products.
