One of the world`s most beautiful new symphony halls is the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, inaugurated in 1997. For serious reasons the hall was completed without the collaboration of the original acoustical consultant. Shortly after the opening the acoustics of the hall showed problems primarily in terms of too long a reverberation time. A team of Spanish and Danish consultants were brought in to find a solution in close collaboration with the architects. The solution included a number of measures, both room acoustical in order to bring the reverberation time down and increase the `projection` of sound to the audience, and also special measures for the members of the orchestras in order to make them feel more comfortable on the (large) stage. In the autumn 2001 the alterations were completed and the new acoustic was very favourably received both by the public, the owners, and the orchestras. New measures in order to make the hall function also as a hall for modern electronic amplified music are under preparation. Considerations and measurements will be presented.
