Duet or Dilemma: Legal and Ethical Considerations in AI and Voices

There are few sounds more important and more communicative than the voice, and accordingly, few areas of audio engineering or technology or sound design where vocal signals are absent. Whether speaking or singing, in conversation or performances, matters of the voice are personal; and audio engineers, sound designers and technologists have always treated voices with care. Enter Machine Learning and AI… Given the inherent acoustic and timbral complexity of vocal sounds, it is no surprise that scientists and technologists are leveraging AI to devise innovative analysis, synthesis, and processing techniques. These developments are giving rise to unprecedented potential for voice manipulation and generation, and also, presenting new challenges for engineers, technologists and designers who work with voices.

Through a moderated discussion, we will delve into several topics pertinent to working with voices; including privacy, deepfakes, training, copyright and model rights, work for hire and protecting voice talent, and working globally across an evolving and varied legal landscape.

Speakers include:
Philipp G. Lengeling, LL.M. (New York), Esq. – Senior Counsel, RafterMarsh Law
