AES Technical Council Mission and Operating Methods

Governance

The Technical Council (TCL) coordinates the activities and policies of the Technical Committees (TCs), advises the Board of Governors by formal resolutions on matters involving technical policy, and serves as a liaison for technical collaboration and information exchange among Society groups and with other organizations having similar or related interests.

Technical Leadership

The TCL and its TCs respond to the interests of AES members by providing technical information through conferences, conventions, workshops, and publications. They track and report advancements in technologies and applications, develop practical tutorial information, assist convention, conference, and papers chairs in preparing technical sessions and demonstrations of new technologies. They also help build the Society’s heritage by acquiring historical materials related to audio.

The TCs lead AES involvement in technical issues. As expert groups, they maintain a high level of interaction throughout the year, allowing technical activity to continue between conventions through virtual forums for discussion of technical, applied, and scientific matters. This network of expertise represents the Society to the outside world and serves its members.

Knowledge Sharing

TCs strive to create and maintain awareness of problems, conditions, standards, and other issues vital to the activities of the AES. Their work is shared through convention activities, guest visits to local sections, monographs, technical documents, tutorial papers, articles in the Journal of the Society, the AES website, and other Society publications. The Society’s position on relevant issues is also communicated through white papers, position papers, related publications, and other tools of communication.

Collaboration

As part of their mandate, TCs identify important technical issues and recommend them to the Standards Committees for further exploration, working closely with those committees throughout the process.

TCs also build bridges to other professional societies and technical organizations through formal and informal activities that encourage the exchange of relevant information and foster collaboration in technical, scientific, and user-oriented matters.

History of The Technical Council

The AES Technical Council and its first Technical Committees were established in 1979. Standing rules governing their activities were adopted in 1986 to define and consolidate the Society’s technical leadership for the benefit of its membership.

The Technical Council consists of Council leadership, the officers of the Technical Committees, the editor of the Journal, and, as ex-officio members without vote, the other officers of the Society.
