Call for Comment on Withdrawl of AES64-2012: AES standard for audio applications of networks - Command, control, and connection management for integrated media

Call for Comment on WITHDRAWAL of AES64-2012, AES standard for audio applications of networks - Command, control, and connection management for integrated media has been published in accordance with our 5-year review policy on 2018-06-22.

The reason for withdrawal is that the standard has become out of date and the original proponents do not think the effort required to update it is worthwhile.

Call for Comment on DRAFT REVISED AES53-xxxx - AES standard for digital audio - Digital input-output interfacing - Sample-accurate timing in AES47

The Call for Comment on DRAFT REVISED AES53-xxxx - "AES standard for digital audio - Digital input-output interfacing - Sample-accurate timing in AES47" was published 2018-06-22.

This document specifies how the timing markers specified in AES47 may be used to associate an absolute timestamp with individual audio samples. AES47 specifies a format for the transmission of digital audio over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. A recommendation is made to refer these timestamps to the SMPTE epoch which in turn provides a reference to UTC and GPS time.

AES67-2018: AES standard for audio applications of networks - High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability Published

The AES67 Standard for audio applications of networks - High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability has become the cornerstone of IP based audio applications.   It has received wide acceptance among manufacturers and users of networked audio equipment in professional applications.

This revision contains clarifications and minor corrections and adds a Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) as an Annex. A new sender keep-alive recommendation, has been added to clause 6.3. Minor clarifications and corrections include a specification of MTU requirements in the presence of allowed (but not recommended) additional information in the RTP header and correcting SDP examples in clause 8.5 to match an erratum issued by the IETF on RFC 7273. Also, the domainNumber range was corrected to conform to IEEE 1588-2008 requirements.

The Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) Annex is a valuable tool to insure proper compliance of AES67 implementations.   An implementation of AES67 that is claimed to conform to the standard must complete a PICS proforma as described in Annex G:

A completed PICS proforma is the PICS for the implementation in question. The PICS is a statement of which capabilities and options of the protocol have been implemented. The PICS can be used for a variety of purposes by various parties, including the following:

a) As a checklist by the protocol implementer, to reduce the risk of failure to conform to the standard through oversight;

b) As a detailed indication of the capabilities of the implementation, stated relative to the common basis for understanding provided by the standard PICS proforma, by the supplier and acquirer, or potential acquirer, of the implementation;

c) As a basis for initially checking the possibility of interworking with another implementation by the user, or potential user, of the implementation (note that, while interworking can never be guaranteed, failure to interwork can often be predicted from incompatible PICS).

The AES67 standard for audio applications of networks gets a logo

The AES67 Standard for audio applications of networks - High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability has become the cornerstone of IP based audio applications. It has received wide acceptance among manufacturers and users of networked audio equipment in professional applications. Many users of the standard have requested a logo for use on their products and literature which will quickly and unambiguously identify products that conform to the specification.

The 2018 version of AES67, to be published next month, includes an annex with protocol implementation criteria. Answering the questions in the annex results in a Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement which is a detailed indication of the capabilities of the implementation, stated relative to the common basis for understanding provided by the standard PICS proforma, by the supplier and acquirer, or potential acquirer, of the implementation.

Use of the logo will be on a self-certification basis. Manufacturers must verify that their product conforms to the requirements of the standard before affixing the logo to their product, its literature or their advertising. Further details of the logo and its license terms will be forthcoming.

New Standards Sustainers

New Standards Sustainers

Waves has joined the AES Standards Sustainer program at the Silver level.  Presonus has also joined at the Silver level.  Attero Tech has joined the Standards Sustainer program at the basic level. The generosity and support of all three companies is greatly appreciated.

The standards work of the Audio Engineering Society has been vital to the advancement of the audio industry.  Numerous standards in development are driving an expansion of the AES standards operation.  That necessitates an expanded base of funding.  Unlike other technical societies with standards programs the AES does not charge participation fees.  The Society believes that a completely open process ultimately produces better and more widely accepted standards.  Consequently other sources of revenue are required.

Standards Sustainers provide critical funding for this effort.  Besides enabling the development of standards that underlie fundamental technology in the audio industry, the program offers participants significant marketing and public relations exposure.  The Audio Engineering Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and 100% of the contribution is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Donors may contribute at three different levels; a $1,000 basic level, $2,000 Silver level, or the $5,000 Gold level.  Details on participating in the Standards Sustainer program may be found on the AES Standards web site.

New project to define a standardized method for transporting metadata associated with audio in an AES67 stream

The SC-02-12-R task group is working on a project to define a standardized method for transporting metadata associated with audio in an AES67 stream. The audio metadata shall be transported in a separate stream that is sent in parallel to AES67 streams rather than part of the AES67 stream. The standard shall define synchronization between the audio metadata transport and the associated AES67 transport. The transmission method shall be low latency and have a level of network performance equivalent to AES67. Within the scope is formatting of the streaming audio metadata for transport. Suggested is an open standards based framework that supports both static and dynamic, time synchronous metadata that is optimized for live workflow applications. The standard shall consider all use cases for metadata associated with AES67, support existing AES audio metadata standards, and be extensible for future metadata requirements. The standard will consider binding between the audio metadata transport and the associated AES67 transport.. 

Since this is a Task Group effort permission of the group chairman is required to participate.  Interested parties should request membership by contacting the Standards Manager

Application of RJ45-type connectors and quad twisted pair cable for audio Interconnections

For some years now, audio signals, both analog and digital, have been transmitted over hardware created for the Ethernet connection protocol, using quad twisted pair (QTP) cabling and “RJ45” connectors. This proposal calls for standardization of the “RJ45” connector pin-out, including channel order, pair color and polarities, and as these correspond to existing audio industry connectors including XLR, 25 pin DSUB and TRS. Other considerations include wiring recommendations, system caveats, and issues arising from operation in the presence of IP network cabling.

SC-05-02 has begun developing a draft standard on this topic.  All interested parties are encouraged to join SC-05-02 and participate.

Call for Comment on DRAFT AES71-xxxx - AES Recommended Practice - Loudness Guidelines for Over the Top Television and Online Video Distribution

The Call for Comment on DRAFT AES71-xxxx, "AES Recommended Practice - Loudness Guidelines for Over the Top Television and Online Video Distribution" was published 2018-03-28.

This AES Recommended Practice (RP) describes the many issues related to online audio Loudness variations.  It provides comprehensive recommendations documenting effective guidelines for managing audio Loudness of soundtracks of television and video content available to consumers by Over-The-Top (OTT) and by Online Video Distributors (OVD).

When followed, these guidelines will provide consistent Loudness, appropriate playback loudness range, reduce audio quality degradation from excessive limiting, preserve the original artistic intent, and improve the listening experience. This document does not provide specific recommendations about target playback loudness or dynamic range.

Call for Comment on DRAFT REVISED AES67-xxxx - High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability

The Call for Comment on DRAFT REVISED AES67-xxxx, "AES standard for audio applications of networks - High-performance streaming audio-over-IP interoperability" was published 2018-02-14. 

This standard defines an interoperability mode for transport of high-performance audio over networks based on the Internet Protocol. For the purposes of the standard, high-performance audio refers to audio with full bandwidth and low noise. These requirements imply linear PCM coding with a sampling frequency of 44,1 kHz and higher and resolution of 16 bits and higher. High performance also implies a low-latency capability compatible with live sound applications. The standard considers latency performance of 10 milliseconds or less.  This standard provides comprehensive interoperability recommendations in the areas of synchronization, media clock identification, network transport, encoding and streaming, session description and connection management.
