AES Student Recording Competition

Have an incredible mix and want to receive professional feedback as well as potentially win prizes?

“The AES Student Recording Competition is a unique opportunity for student attendees of AES International Conventions to receive feedback and recognition for their audio production work. Each school may submit only TWO entries per competition category. Students are expected to submit competition mixes that represent their best final mixing efforts without additional mastering. Judges frequently criticize student mixes for excessive peak limiting and inadequate dynamic range. Therefore, contestants should resist the temptation to maximize loudness to the detriment of tonal balance and musical dynamics.”

            Category 1- Traditional Acoustic Recording

Category 2 – Traditional Studio Recording

Category 3 – Modern Studio Recording & Electronic Music

Category 4 - Sound for Visual Media

            Category 5 - Remix

To participate in the AES Recording Competition, you must:

  • Be a current Student Member of the Audio Engineering Society. Join at aes.org/join. Please note that fees vary by region.

  • Register for a 4 day ALL ACCESS BADGE for the Convention Technical Program.
  • Submit your recording and documentation electronically according to the submission guidelines prior to the deadline.
  • Attend the convention in person.

Please Read in Order to be Considered!

Welcome back to a new Fall semester in the College of Media and Entertainment

MTSU AES Banner

MTSU AES Banner

Hello and welcome, audio students!  Whether you're new to the Audio Production program, a new M.F.A. candidate or a post-candidacy senior approaching graduation, there are many Audio Engineering Society benefits and events to help enhance your education and professional development.

If you're reading this on the aes.org site, then you may already know about the Society, member benefits and local events.  But just in case, here's a recap:

The Audio Engineering Society is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research.

Currently, over 12,000 members are affiliated with more than 75 AES professional sections and more than 95 AES student sections around the world. Section activities may include guest speakers, technical tours, demonstrations and social functions. Through local AES section events, members experience valuable opportunities for professional networking and personal growth.

Again, AES promotes audio as a science and an art form and is a great way to network with professionals in the industry and fellow classmates. Our student chapter here at MTSU is an awesome way to get an inside scoop on developments in pro audio and the Recording Industry curriculum, especially if you’re a pre-candidacy student.

To learn more about the AES organization, check out the website at aes.org.
Also, here are links to additional pages regarding membership fees, how to join, and the Nashville and MTSU AES pages.  Be sure to check out the special benefits for student members, which include free and discounted software, hardware and services.

Here on campus, we are planning events that will also kickoff in early September.  Check this site and watch your MTSU email for details.

Past Event: AES Nashville Spring Mixer Awards and Critique

AES Nashville Spring Mixer Awards and Critique

April 19, 2018 at 5:30 pm

Location: TBA

Moderated by: AES Nashville Section

Speaker(s): Guest Judges

The annual "Spring Mixer," organized and supported by the AES Nashville professional section, is a music mixing competition for student AES members enrolled in Middle Tennessee area undergraduate audio programs.  Now in its 15th year, the event has drawn teams from schools including MTSU, Belmont University, SAE, the Art Institute, Lipscomb University, Blackbird Academy, and even the University of North Alabama.

Each team receives identical raw audio multitracks from a Nashville studio session.  Using identical Pro Tools HD mixing rooms at the MTV Networks Studios in Nashville, the teams have eight hours each (done over a two-day period) to create and deliver a stereo mix with industry-standard documentation.

A panel of judges, who are typically top local engineers and producers, evaluates each mix based on specific sonic and technical qualities.  At this event on April 19, the results will be presented by the judges during a playback session with excerpts from each mix and a lively discussion about what they heard.

Come support your MTSU team and listen to all the mix versions and comments for yourself!  This is always an engaging and ear-opening learning opportunity for all audio production students.

Just want to come listen?
Thanks ok too - everyone is welcome!

Feedback is based on a first come, first serve basis, so don’t wait around! Students who don’t submit their mix on the server beforehand may still get the chance to receive feedback, but priority is given to those who upload their work in advance to the AES Mix Critique folder on the RIM Class Hand-in server.

MTSU Studio A Orientation: Mics, Stands, Cables and Signal Flow

October 5, 2017 at 4:30 pm

Location: RI Studio A, College of Media and Entertainment, Middle Tennessee State University

Moderated by: Kyle Holland and Catherine Baron

Speaker(s): Michael Fleming and Bill Crabtree, faculty co-advisors

As the semester gets underway, we want to welcome all interested students, especially new and pre-candidacy students, to the MTSU Audio Production program with this orientation in Studio A.

We'll start with an overview of AES and student membership benefits.  Then, we'll discuss ways that you can contribute to recording sessions as an assistant, even if you're not enrolled in a particular production class.  Good assistants must demonstrate a number of important social and technical skills which we'll explore through some discussion and hands-on participation.

Key points?

  • Eyes and ears open.
  • Mouth closed (unless in emergencies!)
  • Think and plan ahead.
  • Take notes.
  • Set-up and manipulate stands correctly.
  • Lay out, dress and coil cables properly.
  • Handle mics securely and carefully.
  • Know your signal flow...!
