AES Continues European Growth with Highly Successful 138th Audio Engineering Society Convention in Warsaw, Poland

AES President Andres Mayo

AES President Andres Mayo

The Audio Engineering Society held its highly-successful 138th Audio Engineering Society Convention at the Sofitel Victoria Hotel in Warsaw, Poland, May 7 - 10, 2015, featuring an all-encompassing lineup of the best that professional audio has to offer. From over 50 brands displaying and debuting the latest audio gear and technology, to one of the largest Tech Programs in recent years, the AES138 Convention proved to be a success for attendees, presenters and exhibitors alike.

This first-ever AES Convention to be held in Poland was co-chaired by Bozena Kostek and Umberto Zanghieri, and featured a keynote address by ORF (Austrian TV) sound engineer Florian Camerer, as well as the Heyser Memorial lecture given by Genelec Chairman Dr. Ilpo Martikainen. Other highlights included the popular Project Studio Expo stage, several unique Tech Tours of local Polish audio production facilities, and a wall-to-wall exhibition area, where attendees were given a first-hand look into the latest professional audio equipment and services from leading manufacturers. Additionally, as part of the Tech Program events, the Best Peer-Reviewed Paper Award was presented to Frank Schultz, Florian Straube, and Sascha Spors for Convention Paper 9323 “Discussion of the Wavefront Sculpture Technology Criteria for Straight Line Arrays.” The Student Technical Paper Award was presented to Florian Klein for Convention Paper 9281 "Auditory Adaptation of Spatial Listening Tasks."

"The Warsaw convention exceeded our goals in many areas, and I'm extremely grateful to everyone who came and made it happen,” stated Bob Moses, AES Executive Director. “Attendance was higher than we dared hope for, considering it was our first international event in Poland, and we were following a very successful show in a thriving city last year. The caliber of research and training sessions was excellent, and it was gratifying to see people in the hallways and lounges discussing the day's topics late into the night. I'm loving how the audio community continues to gel at our events, with the next generation of leaders questioning how we can make things better and soaking up the wisdom of the old timers. The exhibition was the largest we've had in Europe in years, and the response from businesses was overwhelmingly positive, with many asking how they can sign up for 2016 and get more deeply involved in AES activities. It seems that we are really finding our groove in Europe. It's not about trying to match what the larger commercial trade shows are doing in the retail sector; rather, it's about incubating innovation that fuels growth in our market, supporting a professional community that is struggling to keep up with the changes, and making sure audio quality is not forgotten in an age of disposable products. I wish I could bask in the glow of this great event for awhile, but our next convention in New York is right around the corner, and we're pulling out all the stops to take it to an even higher level."

The Audio Engineering Society is holding the AES 139th International Convention in New York City, NY, October 29th – November 1st, 2015 at the Jacob Javits Center. For more information on how you can be a part of the AES139 Convention visit http://www.aes.org/events/139/.

137th Audio Engineering Society Convention Breaks Records and Draws Acclaim from Attendees, Exhibitors and Presenters Alike

137th Audio Engineering Society Convention Breaks Records and Draws Acclaim from Attendees, Exhibitors and Presenters Alike
The 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention, held Thursday, October 9, 2014, through Sunday, October 12, 2014, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, was the place to be if you have anything to do with the audio industry. The exhibit floor, panels and technical sessions were packed all four days, and with 15,403 registered attendees and 307 exhibitors/sponsors, AES137 far surpassed any West-Coast AES Convention in the last 10 years or more. At show close, AES reported a 28% increase in registration since the last time the convention was on the West Coast (133rd AES Convention in San Francisco in 2012).

Convention Committee Co-Chairs Valerie Tyler and Michael MacDonald and their team created one of the most ambitious and comprehensive schedules of workshops, panels and technical programs in AES convention history. From the opening keynote address on Thursday by acclaimed engineer, musician and record producer Alan Parsons; and the Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture presented by legendary game audio director and composer Marty O'Donnell; to Friday’s keynote by Neil Portnow, President/CEO The Recording Academy®, The GRAMMY Foundation® and MusiCares; the popular Project Studio Expo and Live Sound Expo; the High Resolution Audio Program in association with DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group; the GRAMMY® SoundTables event “Songs That Move The Needle: Producers on Producing,” moderated by Ed Cherney and featuring Alex da Kid, Don Was, Niko Bolas, No I.D., and Michael Brauer; “DTV Audio Group Forum:The Implications of Streamed Content Delivery on the Evolution of Television”; “Chicks in the Mix,” moderated by acclaimed producer and mixer Chris Lord-Alge and bringing together well-known female industry professionals to discuss their personal experience; “Sound Is the Conduit to the Artist Heart” presented by acclaimed producer, engineer and technologist Jack Joseph Puig; and more, AES137 hit it out of the park for attendees and exhibitors alike.

"I cannot put into words how thrilled I am with the 137th AES Convention,” stated Bob Moses, Executive Director of the AES. “Our organizing committee really outdid themselves, with over 350 presentations from an astounding 731 leading researchers and practitioners in the field, many of them standing-room-only. We have some serious momentum built from recent conventions in New York and Berlin, and we are going to keep it going for the coming conventions in Warsaw in May and then back to New York next October. You could say that our conventions and the AES organization have a renewed energy, and we couldn’t be happier.”

No matter what sector of the industry you are involved in — recording & production, broadcast & streaming, game audio, live sound, networked audio, sound for picture, post production or system integration — AES137 had it all. The convention received support from leading audio companies including: Audionamix, Audinate, Audio Precision, Auro Technologies, Avid, DiGiCo, EAW, Focusrite/Novation, L-Acoustics, Lectrosonics, Location Sound Corp, MOTU, Sennheiser/Neumann, Shure, TC Electronic, TC Applied Technologies, THAT Corp, Universal Audio, and Yamaha.

AES Showcases Latest Audio Innovations and Best Practices at 136th International Convention in Berlin

— Successful Technical Program and Exhibition draw high attendance and positive response from attendees and exhibitors alike —

— AES Executive Director Bob Moses announces next European AES Convention will take place in Warsaw, Poland (Spring 2015) —

The 136th Audio Engineering Society Convention, which took place April 26 - 29, 2014 at the Estrel Hotel and Convention Center in Berlin, Germany, celebrated four days of the best professional audio has to offer. Featuring a highly-successful mix of Technical Program events, manufacturer exhibitions, Project Studio Expo presentations and more, AES136 enjoyed increased attendance and interaction among an enthusiastic gathering of personalities from every aspect of audio engineering and related industries.

The 1,259 attendees of the 136th Convention – over twice the attendance of Rome, the year before – were presented with opportunities ranging from over 100 Papers and Engineering Briefs, dedicated Workshops and Panels on topics of interest, and Tutorials presenting important audio fundamentals. Additionally, top manufacturers showed their latest offerings and next-generation technologies in the exhibits hall.

Prominent industry figures offered their take on the convention:

Chas Rowden, EMEA Sales Manager for exhibitor Calrec Audio Ltd., stated, “After several years of absence from AES European events, it was a pleasure for Calrec Audio to exhibit at AES136 convention in Berlin. The AES has a new energy and focus that we as a manufacturing company found invigorating, with exiting new ideas and opportunities revealed each day of the show. Best of all, it was a pure audio industry occasion! Looking forward to Warsaw in 2015!”

Kerstin Mischke, EVE Audio GmbH’s Sales and Marketing Manager, offered: “We were very excited when we became aware that AES would return to our hometown Berlin after ten years of absence. Soon it became very clear that we did not want to miss the show. We looked for opportunities not only to exhibit but also to contribute. With assistance from AES representatives, EVE Audio became part of the technical program. We offered tours in which participants could visit our acoustic lab with its anechoic and reverberation chambers – all available tickets for both tours were sold out within a very short time. We can conclude that AES136 convention in Berlin was a very good show for us. Interest in our products in general was great, our tours were highly welcomed, and the overall atmosphere at the show and industry feedback have been very positive. We definitely would love to see AES returning more regularly to Berlin, because this town is a real hot spot when it comes to music, musicians and audio – and a great place to be.“

AES Executive Director Bob Moses added, “I’m really excited about the growth of the convention here in Berlin, and about the amazing people who keep the AES community enthralled and inspired year after year. From our mold-breaking Keynote speaker, Wieslaw Woszczyk, to the standing-room-only Heyser Memorial lecture given by Dietrich Schüller, to the first European edition of the Project Studio Expo, which drew in a packed room of up-and-coming audio engineers, and literally dozens of others that participate and move our industry forward in real-time at these events, we can truly call this year’s program a success. We thank everyone who came out to participate, our sponsors, and our co-chairs Sascha Spors and Umberto Zanghieri for putting on a fantastic event.”

Additionally, AES Executive Director Bob Moses made the announcement that next year’s European AES Convention will take place in Warsaw, Poland (Spring 2015), taking advantage of its burgeoning audio industry and growing base of audio engineers, producers and music aficionados.

Graham Blyth Celebrates 20 years of Organ Concerts at AES 135

A Graham Blyth Organ Concert was held during the 135th AES Convention in New York, NY. The concert featured works by Marchand, Bach, Franck and Gigout. As a part of the concert Robert Schulein and Dan Mapes Riordan made a combined Binaural and HD video recording for downloading following the convention. This recording consists of a composition by César Franck (1822-1890): Trois Píéces (1878): Fantasie in A, Cantabile, and Píéce Héroïque.

The audio/video recordings have now been edited and uploaded to YouTube. The recordings have been formatted for either headphone or loudspeaker auditioning by AES members. For those that attended the concert, these recordings will allow the opportunity to compare the live event to a surround audio with video recording process compatible with today's consumer viewer/listening technology.
