The inaugural AES International Conference on Audio for Virtual and Augmented Reality, to be held on September 30 and October 1, 2016, will be co-located with the 141st AES Convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center’s West Hall. The two-day program of technical papers, workshops, tutorials and a manufacturer’s expo will throw a unique spotlight on the creative and technical challenges of providing immersive spatial audio to accompany virtual-reality and augmented-reality media, which is demonstrably the fastest-growing section of the entertainment-audio markets. The deadline for Paper proposals has been extended to May 23rd for those who still wish to participate in this first-ever AES event.
The conference will attract content developers, researchers, manufacturers, consultants and students, in addition to audio engineers seeking to expand their knowledge about sound production for virtual and augmented reality. The companion Expo will feature displays from leading-edge manufacturers and service providers looking to secure industry metrics for this emerging field.
“Film director George Lucas once stated that sound represents 50% of the motion-picture experience,” considers co-chair Andres Mayo. “This conference will demonstrate that convincing VR and AR productions, using a variety of playback devices, require audio that follows the motions of the subject, and produce a realistic immersive experience. Our program will spotlight the work of leading proponents in this exciting field of endeavor, and how realistic spatial audio can be produced from existing game-console and DSP engines.”
The rich and varied conference program will provide an overview of the AR/VR creative process, applications workflow and product development, while creating an activity hub to focus attention on the expertise the Audio Engineering Society can offer these expanding creative communities. Costs range from $195 for a 1-Day Pass for AES members ($295 for a 2-Day Pass) and $125 for accredited students, to $280/$435 for non-members; early-bird discounts also are available.
Proposed topics include: Object-based Audio Mixing for VR/AR Applications; Immersive Audio in VR/AR Broadcast; Live VR Audio Production; Developing Audio Standards for VR/AR Applications; Cross Platform Audio Considerations in VR Applications; and Streaming Immersive Audio Content.
This must-attend conference will be held within a recently-remodeled 300-seat theater and companion seminar room at the LA Convention Center. A unique entrance from the main convention lobby will offer a dedicated attendee registration check-in and related facilities. Conference registrants can also attend the 141st AES Convention’s companion exhibition and select educational sessions and special events free of charge with an Exhibits-Plus badge.

Experiencing Binaural Listening – recreating a 3D soundspace through headphones, which is an ever-expanding aspect of present-day audio – will be an integral component of the 140th AES Convention, coming to the Palais des Congrès in Paris June 4 to 7. France occupies a leading role in the research and the development of Binaural Listening (the BiLi project) due to both the remarkable research of Rozenn Nicol at Orange Labs (formerly France Telecom) and the growing demand for binaural listening in the Audio and Audio Visual market. Rozenn is also the author of a fascinating AES Monograph on Binaural Technology.
During the Technical Program at the 140th AES Convention, many of the groups participating in the BiLi project in France will be present (Orange Labs, France Televisions, CNSMDP – Conservatoire de Paris, IRCAM, Radio France, Arkamys, Trinnov, a-volute, CNRS-LIMSI). One of the workshop rooms will be completely equipped with headphones so attendees can hear a Binaural Listening experience first hand. Radio France, under the responsibility of Edwige Roncière and Hervé Desjardin, have also produced a remarkable amount of program material for both 5.1 Multichannel and Binaural Listening. This important research and development work will be presented in Workshops, and through special activities devoted to Audio Projection, in Multichannel and with Binaural Listening.

The 139th Audio Engineering Society Convention (held Thursday, October 29, through Sunday, November 1, 2015, at the Javits Center in New York City) was the place to be for anyone involved with the audio industry. The exhibit floor, panels and technical sessions were packed all four days, and highlights included the Project Studio Expo, Live Sound Expo, GRAMMY SoundTables® panel, and the lighting of the Empire State Building in blue and white in AES’s honor. Registration was near 18,500, with All Access and Exhibits-Plus registrations at an all-time high.
“The 139th AES Convention was a success by every measure,” says Bob Moses, Executive Director of the AES. “From the amazing content and packed audiences of the technical and special events program, to an exhibits floor that was crowded with attendees, to the exhibitors and sponsors that participated, energy and excitement were everywhere. And the Empire State Building being lit in our colors – how awesome is that? The AES HQ staff and legions of volunteers – including leading professionals – poured their hearts into the Convention. Attendees of all types went home satisfied, and the AES itself benefits from their participation, ensuring the Society’s continued good health.”
The AES 139th Convention also saw a boom in social media involvement. A core team of five web-active AES members worked with three video crews and convention volunteers to ensure consistent posting on multiple platforms from all areas of the conference. Results included increased engagement including more than 10 million impressions on Twitter utilizing #AES139, and a large number of added followers on Facebook and Twitter. In addition to social media, Halloween night got social at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, as AES teamed up with Vintage King Audio to present Afterglow 7, the biggest ever after-party in the series.
Convention Committee Co-chair Jim Anderson and his team created a highly ambitious and comprehensive schedule of workshops, panels and technical programs with a staggering 400 sessions, including the popular Platinum series of panels made up of many of the best engineers and producers.Co-chair Paul Gallo worked closely with the AES marketing team to drive traffic on the convention floor, resulting in a wide representation of attendees from various sectors in the audio industry, including recording and production, broadcast and streaming, game audio, live sound, networked audio, post production, system integration and more.
“The 139th AES Convention in New York City has been nothing but a big success, gathering around 20,000 visitors in the three days it’s been on,” stated Lars-Olof Janflod, Genelec Oy Marketing and PR Director. “This is the biggest pro audio event in the world.”
Mick Olesh, Waves EVP of Sales & Marketing, comments, "AES was exceptionally strong this year, with a smooth operation and excellent attendance. It afforded us the opportunity to showcase our new products, and, together with Waves Artist presentations at our booth, to further enhance our relationship with our user base."
Steve Strassberg, Dale Pro Audio VP/ General Manager, noted, "Our decision to participate and have a booth at the AES show really paid off. The Convention being in our own back yard made the decision very easy. Our goals were to make some great new connections across all of the vertical markets that Dale serves, and to have quality face time with our existing customers. Our sales team also had the opportunity to strengthen relationships with our top vendors, so, on many levels, it was time well spent."
“AES New York was amazing as always, as no other show draws such a diverse crowd of key decision leaders in music, post, broadcast and live sound,” stated Phil Wagner, President of Focusrite Novation Inc. “The energy was great, and the crowd was ever present. We appreciate being able to be a part of the AES New York community, and we look forward to a strong presence at AES Los Angeles next year.”
Across all sectors of the industry — recording & production, broadcast & streaming, game audio, live sound, networked audio, sound for picture, post-production or system integration — the 139th AES Convention had it all. With nearly 300 exhibitors, the convention also received support from industry sponsors and partners including: Audio Precision, Auro Technologies, AVID, Cadac, Clear-Com, Dolby, DiGiCo, DPA, DTV Audio Group, Focusrite Novation, EAW, Genelec, Optocore, THAT Corporation, L-Acoustics, Shure, The Recording Academy® Producers & Engineers Wing®, NewBay Media, Lectrosonics, Universal Audio, Yamaha, Neumann, Meyer Sound, Prism Sound, Oculus, VUE Audiotechnik, Sennheiser, Sound On Sound, Guitar Center Professional, SPARS, Sweetwater, Triad-Orbit and Waves.
