Report of the meeting of the SC-02-02 Working Group on Digital audio interfaces, held online, 2024-10-03

The meeting was convened by chair John Grant.

Present were Rich Cabot, Al Walker, Kevin Gross, Junichi Yoshio, Bruce Olson, John Grant, Paul Treleaven, Jackie Green, Jim Meyer, Dries Neirynck.

The formal notice on patent policy was read.

The agenda was approved as written.

There were no comments on the report of the previous meeting, held online, 2024-05-23.

Projects assigned to this group but not mentioned here had no action requested or required - see www.aes.org/standards/meetings/project-status.cfm for details.

Open projects:

AES10-R Review of AES10-2020: AES Recommended Practice for Digital Audio Engineering - Serial Multichannel Audio Digital Interface (MADI)

This standard describes the data organization and electrical characteristics for a multichannel audio digital interface (MADI). It includes a bit-level description, features in common with the two-channel format of the AES3, and the data rates required for its utilization. The meeting proposed reaffirmation.

AES50-R Review of AES50-2020, AES standard for digital audio engineering - High-resolution multi-channel audio interconnection (HRMAI)

This standard specifies a bi-directional, point-to-point connection for up to 48 channels of digital audio in a variety of formats. The link uses a single Category 5 (or better) structured-wiring data cable, and is designed for use in a studio environment. The meeting proposed reaffirmation.

AES51-R Review of AES51-2020: AES standard for digital audio - Digital input-output interfacing - Transmission of ATM cells over Ethernet physical layer

This standard specifies an encapsulation of ATM cells in Ethernet packets, so that ATM equipment may be connected using hardware specified for Ethernet networks. The meeting proposed reaffirmation.

AES-2id-R Review of AES-2id-2020: AES information document for digital audio engineering - Guidelines for the use of the AES3 interface

This presents information intended to assist a user to understand and use the AES3 digital audio interface. The meeting proposed reaffirmation.

AES-10id-R Review of AES-10id-2020: AES information document for digital audio engineering - Engineering guidelines for the multichannel audio digital interface (MADI) AES10

This provides guidance for areas of application of the MADI standard (AES10) that might be unclear. The meeting proposed reaffirmation.

AES-X260 UWB Hi Res, Low Latency Audio Interface

Scope: Describe the preferred way to implement connection management, assure consistent audio quality, and provide for interoperable audio and feature control sets for the MAC convergence and application layers of UWB devices intended for high-quality audio use. Provide extensions to IEEE 802.15.4ab standard which defines connection, operating features and command structure in order to provide an interoperable interface between UWB audio capture and playback devices.

B Rolfe has made contact with IEEE's liaison officer to arrange that the task group can have sight of 802.15.4 drafts. The "straw man" X260 draft is being developed on Google Drive because the AES document area is still not available. A tutorial on audio requirements might also be needed because most of the task group members do not have an audio background. However, two microphone manufacturers have expressed interest in joining.

Liaisons:

No liasons were reported.

New projects

No new projects were proposed.

New business

No new business was raised.

The next meeting will be held online in May 2025, scheduled in conjunction with the AES 158th Convention.
